Winter caravans: what to look for when buying

Photo: Lebanon Caravans
Most caravans look great on a sunny showroom yard. Winter is where the differences show: in the Cedars, Faraya or the Dinnieh hills, a poorly built caravan becomes a cold, damp box with frozen pipes, while a good one feels like a warm mountain cabin you can tow anywhere.
The full guide covers what to check before you buy: insulation of walls, floor and roof, double-glazed windows with blinds and a roof vent, which heater is really fitted (and a CO alarm), water you can drain before a freezing night, battery and charging for short winter days, propane in an outside locker, and a chassis and tyres that cope with mountain roads.
As a real example we use the RCFS off-road caravan from Lebanon Caravans: 4.50 x 2.25 x 2.00 m, sleeps 4 and seats 7, with bunk beds, a sofa that turns into a double, a bathroom, a kitchen with a gas hob, a fridge, an air conditioner, tank gauges and a drain point. The local BIJANCO RCSS version has similar contents.
